Brake pads are an essential component of your vehicle's braking system, and they play an important part in keeping you and your passengers safe on the road. Brake pads differ from other components in your car because they wear off at an increased rate - they are designed to do so. If you want to catch them before they are completely gone, you should know a couple of warning signs. Here are several symptoms that your brake pads are starting to wear out or have already diminished:
Squeaking Or Squealing Noise
One of the most common signs of worn-out brake pads is a squeaking or squealing noise when you push on the brakes. This sound can be caused by the wear indicator on the brake pads (the small metal tab that is designed to make noise), rust, or uneven wear.
Grinding Noise
If your brake pads are severely worn out, you may hear a grinding noise when you use the brakes. This sound is caused by the worn-out brake pads rubbing directly against the brake rotor, which can cause significant damage to both components. When the material is worn off of the brake pads, the only thing left is metal - therefore, a grinding sound occurs.
Reduced Brake Responsiveness And Performance
Is your vehicle taking longer to stop than it used to, or do the brakes feel less responsive? This may be a sign that your brake pads are worn out. This can result in dangerous situations, as it can significantly increase your stopping distance and put you at risk of a collision.
Vibration Or Pulsation
If you feel vibrations or pulsations in the brake pedal when you apply pressure, it may be a sign that your brake pads are extremely worn-out. Make sure to take advantage of this obvious sign and visit a repair shop.
Warning Light
Many modern vehicles are equipped with a warning light on the dashboard, specifically for the brake pads. It resembles a circle (for the rotor) with lines on each side (for the brake pads). This light is a very good reminder for a visit to a mechanic, so make sure you do so.
