Many of the common kinds of BMW issues can be avoided if you take care of your car and perform regular maintenance. It’s a good habit to get into if you want to get the most out of your vehicle. The average American spends an hour and a half every weekday driving. As a BMW driver, at least you have a great car in which to do so.

Not only can regular maintenance help you get the most out of your BMW for as long as possible, but it also helps decrease the likelihood of you being the cause of an accident. Poorly maintained vehicles cause accidents at a collective cost of $2 billion a year.

The Most Important Maintenance

Engine

Your car’s engine is the heart of your BMW. It keeps you moving. It’s what gives you power and performance. Have it checked a couple of times a year along with your radiator.

Brakes

Driving a BMW is lots of fun but you also want to be able to stop. Your brakes need to be checked regularly. Don’t wait until you start to feel something is off. It’s important to flush the brake system every two years or so as well to keep the debris out that could interfere with your braking ability.

Tires

One of the top causes of accidents is damaged or faulty tires. Properly inflated tires help you grip the road and increases fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires are three times as likely to be involved in a car crash. Check tire pressure at least once a month if not weekly. Also, take the time to check for damage to the tire walls and that they have adequate tread depth. Have your tires rotated to keep them wearing evenly so you can get the most mileage out of your tires.

Cooling System

The cooling system is another very important component of your BMW. It is responsible for cooling the engine and keeping it at an optimal operating temperature. It needs to be flushed every three years to keep it functioning correctly.

Transmission Fluid

Even though you may have been told that the transmission fluid in your BMW is a lifetime fill, it really needs to be flushed every 50K miles or so to keep it doing its job. It costs way less than new transmission assemblies.

Power Steering Fluid

Your power steering fluid needs to be flushed every 50K miles to keep it from breaking down and contaminated. Without doing so, you can end up with steering system leaks or other failures.

Oil Change

Changing your oil is one of the most critical things you can do for your BMW’s health. Consult with your mechanic to decide on the best intervals for your specific model combined with your driving habits.
